Stress is neither positive or negative. It is a neutral force but our response to stress can motivate us and push us towards success or it can weaken us and cause failure, illness, disease and in some instances, be fatal.
When we face a stressful situation the information is passed to our brain. A chemical process then takes place, part of which involves the brain passing instructions to body organs to alter their activity during this situation. The adrenal glands then release hormones to help us respond to the situation. These hormones are adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol.

When faced with a potentially dangerous situation, we experience the 'fight or flight response'. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are predominant here. When you think of aggression and fighting you think of adrenaline. In fact it is noradrenaline that is predominant when you experience anger, aggression and the fight response. Adrenaline is predominant in the flight response, when we need strength in our legs and arms to allow us to flee fast! The most potent action of noradrenaline is to constrict blood vessels, so during the flight response when we need more blood to our leg and arm muscles, noradrenaline constricts vessels leading to other areas to reduce the blood flow where there is a lesser need. As a result of this constriction, the heart must work harder in order to circulate the blood. This may cause problems with anyone suffering from coronary artery disease.
Fight or flight responses are usually over quickly. The resistance response occurs when demands persist. During this response cortisol is predominant. In excessive amounts, cortisol is known to decrease the number of circulating lymphocites and eosinophils (blood cells which help fight infection), causing the thymus and lymph nodes (where lymphocites are manufactured) to shrivel up and depress the production of antibodies. As a result of this, the immune system is weakened, the ability to fight infection lessened. Colds and flu may be experienced more often. In addition the body can become more susceptible to immune related diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, asthma, cancer and HIV.
