After two shows during a two week holiday to Gran Canaria in July 09, I was off to the Highlands of Scotland to perform for the Kyle & Sutherland Gala at Bonar Bridge in August. Previously performed here a couple of years previously and it was great to be back. Both times I've had a great reception from a friendly and enthusiastic audience.
Feedback from the show at Capitol, Sauchiehall St, Glasgow, 15th May 09 in aid of Make A Wish Foundation.
The charity made in excess of £500 and a great night was had by all. After a reluctant start I managed to get ten volunteers on stage and finished with five excellent performers.
"I saw Peter Powers last month and this was better!!"
"Brilliant, you were absolutely brilliant"
"Great show Stuart, now go and find more venues"
"My friends want tickets next time"
Without doubt, stage hypnosis is one of the most hilarious forms of entertainment available. It is also one, in my opinion, where adults can easily be satisfied without the need for x-rated performances. I have done the adult shows at the request of venue management but I feel much more comfortable entertaining with family oriented routines with 2 or 3 'gentle' adult routines added for good measure.
I never use routines that contravene the UK's 1952 Hypnotism Act, whether performing in the UK or in the Canary Islands. In fact I take great pride in my treatment of any volunteers. Whilst some hypnotists treat volunteers as 'subjects', I continue to treat them as people.
When I performed in Gran Canaria I finished my show one evening when one of the volunteers throughout the show approached me. She put her arms around me, gave me a friendly hug and thanked me for not embarrassing her on stage. At another venue the entertainer continually promoted my show for days right up until the last half hour prior to the start. After I had performed about 6 times here, I noticed he began adding 'Anyone who is interested in being hypnotized should volunteer when Stuart asks. Don't be afraid, he really looks after you on stage!' I was quite touched by this but it's true. I want people to leave my shows smiling, whether as a volunteer or an audience member. I want them to WANT to come back again and to tell others.
People have reservations about hypnosis shows and being hypnotized. This is perfectly natural, we all have a fear or trepidation of the unknown. If someone has never been hypnotized before they will have no idea what to expect. Many people believe you have no idea what's going on and are completely at the mercy of the hypnotist. This is far from the truth. You are well aware of everything and are in control of yourself.
Think about it. If I could control people and leave them with absolutely no memory of what happened then why not hypnotize people to rob banks and to take the rap if caught? If they've no memory of the hypnosis they can't point the finger at me. Whilst, for me, it's not likely to be as exciting as performing shows but it's likely to be much more lucrative, less stressful and an easy earner. The fact is it wouldn't happen because I cannot force someone to do something that contravenes their morals and beliefs.
No two hypnosis shows are the same. even if you were to use the exact same routines with the same volunteers, the responses would be different. Having said that I regularly vary my show and am constantly looking to try new routines. If you were to book me on a Wednesday and Thursday the same week you would see an entirely different show both nights.
